OUR PORTFOLIO

In December of 2016, EWB-UTOLEDO partnered with the community of Irkaswaa, Kenya and the registered non-profit organization My Chosen Vessels to implement a water system in the community. Irkaswaa is a Maasai community encompassing approximately eight square miles. The Maasai are one of the last remaining and oldest indigenous tribal communities in East Africa. Livestock is their primary source of food, nutrition, and income. During an assessment trip to the community in March 2017, EWB-UTOLEDO determined that the communities needs were critical. Collecting water took an exorbitant amount of time for the women of the community, but the task was made necessary by the unavailability of clean water sources nearby. EWB-UTOLEDO took samples of several sources of water used by the community and determined that they all were polluted by either E. Coli or coliform. Because of this pollution, the community experienced a high rate of fatal waterborne illness. Immediately, EWB-UTOLEDO worked with the leaders of the community to develop a sustainable solution to the problem. Community members enthusiastically supported the creation of a well and water distribution system, and they created a board to collect funding and supervise system operation.
